ATTICA IN TWELVE LANDSCAPES
A Collaborative Ethnographic Project
Attica in Twelve Landscapes is a riff on Brett Story’s film “The Prison in Twelve Landscapes,” which illuminates reflections of the prison “from the places we least expect to find it.” The United States today has the highest rate of incarceration of any country on the planet*, but often when we imagine the prison, we picture a space that begins and ends within four walls. Brett Story’s work and ours are attempts to question the locations of those boundaries and to focus in on seemingly innocuous spaces where the prison becomes visible.
*Though the United States represents only 4.4 percent of the world's population, it incarcerates 22 percent of the world's prisoners.

THE LANDSCAPES
The fieldwork that led to this project was conducted as part of a course at University of Rochester: The Cultural Politics of Prison Towns. Throughout the semester, we’ve spent time in Attica listening to people’s stories, wandering down Main Street, and trying to capture the feelings of daily life. We hope this virtual platform will allow you access into some of the history and culture of Attica, NY.
