UPSTATE CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM - CAR DEALERSHIP

In our last visit to Attica, NY, we decided to stop by one of Attica’s car dealerships in order to find out more about the town’s transportation. However, what had first started off as an inquiry about Attica’s transportation system, soon transpired into us learning about the income based housing nearby. When we entered the car dealership, we approached the sale representative and initially asked her about the prices of the cars. We learned that the car dealerships in Attica try to price their cars lower than the shops in major cities or surrounding towns in order to get more customers to buy their cars. The lowest car prices in the shop were about $6,000 but the rest were pretty expensive. The prices of the car eventually led us to ask about how low-income people from Attica could afford these cars. Unfortunately, the sales representative was unable to answer that question. We found out that Washington St. and Water St. are where the lower income houses are located and that close by this car dealership is an apartment complex called, “Colony Run” – it’s income based housing. In regards to getting from point A to point B, people in Attica also depend on walking, riding bikes and borrowing someone’s car if they do not have their own.

She brought up RTS (Regional Transit Service) and how some people in Attica and nearby towns depend on this little grey bus as transportation. Although she was aware of the existence of this bus, she could not tell more much information regarding it. Interestingly enough, on our last trip to Attica, this was our group’s first time seeing this grey bus around.

Group Member 1:

  • As we headed back to the Family Dollar/Tops parking lot to talk to the driver of an RTS shuttle. It was a small grey bus with a sign that said shuttle on the side. We hadn’t seen any kind of public transit in Attica during any of our previous visits and wondered if it was at all related to the prison. Skylar struck up a conversation with the driver, a man of color, who gave her a map of the route from Attica to Warsaw.

  • We had planned to pick Sadyn up when she was finished at the dealership, but she ended up crossing the street and talking to the same shuttle driver a second time. She was also given a map and we laughed about the mix up in the car.

Group Member 2:

  • Interestingly people are able to call RTS and request special pickups and drop offs. For example, people who are employees at the prison can request to get picked up from Attica Prison to get dropped off to where they want to in Attica or to any nearby counties

  • He handed me two pamphlets with the routes and schedules for RTS – Route 229: Attica to Warsaw, Route 221: Village of Warsaw, and Route 222: Arcade/Botavia (RTS stops at Attica

  • The bus driver said he definitely picks up people so they can visit inmates at Attica Prison

  • As soon as I finished talking to him, the rest of my group was ready to pick me up. When I got in the car, they told me that they had already spoken to him while I was at the car dealership. But I think it was beneficial for me to experience that interaction myself.
