WHAT AM I LOOKING AT?

Black Text on a White Background

The aesthetic choices for this website were intentional. As Attica, NY is a predominantly white town with the only people of color nearby living within the prison, we wanted to make that visually apparent throughout this website. The image above is from the University of Virginia's Racial Dot Map project and makes this dynamic very clear. We chose instead to mirror the more subtle and often unnoticed reality through the stark white background of every page punctuated by black text. Additionally, we believe that this image grounds our work-- it was one of the first and most striking visual representations we saw of our prison town, and remains one of the most important.
